The Japan Master Tax Guide 2009/10 provides an informative framework of Japanese taxes in English and includes insightful commentary on the Japanese tax statutes, regulations and National Tax Agency circulars.
Using non-technical language and illustrative examples, flowcharts and exhaustive citations to Japanese laws and regulations, it allows non-Japanese tax practitioners to gain a deeper understanding of the Japanese tax laws. With references to tax statutes and headings in kanji characters, the guide is also useful to English-speaking Japanese tax practitioners.
It is designed to be used by business and individuals subject to Japanese taxes, and tax professionals who deal with Japanese tax issued.
Changes in Japanese taxation reported in this edition include the following major points of the 2009 Tax Act:
- *Temporary reduction for two years in the rate of Corporation Tax for small or medium-sized enterprises from 22% to 18% on income not exceeding ¥8 million.
- *Replacement of the indirect foreign tax credit system of exempting 95% of dividends from foreign subsidiaries from Japanese tax.
- *Elimination of the LIFO method for valuing inventories.
- *Provision of full and partial exemptions from the motor vehicle tonnage tax for motor vehicles that meet environmental standards.
- *Allowance of tax-deductible matching contributions by employees to defined contribution plans.
- *Extension of relief provisions for taxation of dividends and capital gains from listed shares
- Provision of a special capital gains deduction for individuals selling land acquired in 2009 or 2010 if the land has been held for at least five years as of 1 January of the year of sale.
