Can expatriate employees in Malaysia be paid from outside Malaysia?

Expatriate employees working in Malaysia can be paid from a payroll outside Malaysia. However, if the company who administers the payroll does not have a legal presence in Malaysia, the company would not be able to register as an employer with the Malaysian Inland Revenue Board (MIRB) and comply with an employer’s obligations with regards to monthly tax withholding payment to the MIRB.
