Are there any restrictions on foreigners who wish to acquire land in India?

Foreign nationals of non-Indian origin cannot acquire any immovable property in India by way of purchase. However, foreign nationals can hold immovable property by way of inheritance from a person resident in India. Proceeds from the sale of inherited property by a foreign national can be repatriated, subject to the sale being backed by documentary evidence in support of inheritance and tax certificates from the tax authority submitted to the authorised dealer for remittance. A foreign national can acquire residential property on lease not exceeding five years.
Citizens of certain countries cannot acquire immovable property other than lease, not exceeding five years, except with the permission of the Reserve Bank of India,
